Our process
Transforming waste into value
With biotechnology we release valuable nutrients from food waste and produce an enriched growth medium that can be used for the cultivation of microbes such as microalgae, lactic acid bacteria og fungi. These microbes can in turn be used as a source of protein or omega-3 in fish and livestock feed.
Behind our great process lies years of scientific research and hundreds of trials.
Food waste
Food waste is gathered by the local renovation company and transported to a nearby processing facility.
Nutrient release
We break down all forms of carbohydrates in food waste into sugar. For this we use a mixture of different enzymes and physical treatment with temperature and pressure. We also break down proteins in the food waste into peptides and amino acids, so they become water-soluble and are part of the growth medium. This process liquefies most of the food waste. With our long and unique expertise, we have succeeded in converting as much as 80 % of the carbohydrates.
Growth medium
Our nutritious growth medium is high-quality and produced at much lower cost than existing growth media. In addition, our solution is much more sustainable than what is available on the market today.
We don’t use any new resources; we upcycle food waste.
We reduce carbon emissions from waste management.
We can replace animal feed ingredients that are currently transported long distances and are causing deforestation.
Impact
Redefining food waste management
We waste one third of food produced globally, a total of 2,5 billion tons per year.
Current waste management solutions such as landfills and incineration practices are large emitters of greenhouse gases, while solutions like composting and biogas are not optimal in terms of neither efficiency nor extracting the nutrient value in the waste.
Our process is contributing to a greener environment and gives waste a value.
